Design, Build & Test a Structure
This activity challenges students to design, construct and test a structure (beam, truss, etc.) which will span a specific distance. The structures will be evaluated by monitoring the amount of deflection at the midpoint while under varying loads.
The goal is to create a structure which will support as much weight as possible while showing minimal deflection. Structures may be constructed from a wide variety of materials and assembled in different ways.
The software will monitor and display the deflection (in inches) of each structure. The load will also be displayed for each test. The results of each test will remain visible on the screen so students can quickly compare each structure. Students will easily understand the forces present on all structures when placed under a load.
This is an excellent experience for introducing a bridge building activity. Additional bass wood sticks are available in the accessories section of our web site which are recommended for this challenge.
