Fiber optics is a hybrid of three technologies: optics, lasers and electronics. This module will give students a comprehensive understanding of fiber optics. We begin with the history of fiber optics, then discuss several applications, get into a little physics when we talk about light in the fiber cable and list the different types of transmitters and receivers and how they work. Hands-on activities include: Duplex data transmission, transmission of radio signals, remote passive optical detection sensor, attenuation, bending losses, fiber termination, electronic repeater and much more. An outline of the 10-day Curriculum includes: - Introduction
- Fiber Optics at the Beginning
- Applications of Fiber Optics
- Light at the Beginning
- Fiber Optics in Optical Sensors
- Creation of Light
- Fiber Optic Receivers
- Expand and Network
- Fiber Optic Tools and Connectors
- Wrap Up and Final Test
